Today, the word “elf” might make people think of Santa’s helpers or Elf on the Shelf or 'The Lord of the Rings’. However, the original elves and dwarves WebDwarves come from Norse mythology. That is their original source. Tolkien adopted them, keeping their original names as listed in the Poetic Edda and other Old Norse sources. Balin, Dwalin, Thorin, Thrain... Tolkien did not create any of these names, but rather borrowed them straight out of Norse myth.
